I have changed my ECN account to Standard on Vantage but so far there has been no volatility to test, because he has only opened one trade this week and lost a small amount. But I have had to change the spread value in the parameters as the standard account has quite a lot of spread and always has more than the maximum set by default.

The spread is the broker's earnings. You can't influence this. But you may find a broker with a low spread. Your earnings depend on this. The passive trader loses, the active trader wins.
